Is Royal Enfield Indian? The British Motorcycle Brand That India Kept Alive

Royal Enfield began in England, but the British company shut down decades ago. Today the brand is owned by India's Eicher Motors. Here's how an English name became an Indian icon.

The thump of a Royal Enfield Bullet is one of the most recognisable sounds on Indian roads. The Classic 350, the Bullet, the Himalayan, the Hunter โ€” Royal Enfield owns the mid-size motorcycle segment in India and has become a cult brand far beyond it.

The name sounds British, and the history is British. So is Royal Enfield foreign?

The short answer: No โ€” Royal Enfield is Indian-owned, by Eicher Motors.

The English origins

Royal Enfield traces its roots to the Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch, England, which made bicycles, motorcycles, and precision parts from the late nineteenth century onward. The Bullet motorcycle first appeared in the 1930s.

How the Bullet came to India

In the early 1950s, the Indian government chose the Bullet for its army and police. To supply them, Enfield India was set up in Madras (now Chennai) in 1955, at first assembling motorcycles from imported kits and soon manufacturing them locally.

Back in England, the original company declined and ceased operations around 1970. The Indian operation kept building the Bullet, largely unchanged, for decades โ€” which is why the brand survived at all.

Eicher takes over

In 1994, Enfield India was acquired by the Eicher Group, an Indian industrial group controlled by the Lal family, and the company was renamed Royal Enfield. In the 2000s, under Siddhartha Lal, Eicher chose to focus on Royal Enfield, modernised its engines and factories, and turned it into one of the most profitable motorcycle businesses in the world.

Who owns Royal Enfield today

Royal Enfield is a division of Eicher Motors Ltd, which is listed on the BSE and NSE. The Lal family, as promoters, hold the largest controlling stake โ€” roughly half of Eicher Motors โ€” with the rest held by institutional and retail investors. The Royal Enfield brand and trademark belong to the Indian company.

Royal Enfield does have a technical centre in the United Kingdom, and it sells motorcycles in many countries. But that is an Indian company operating abroad โ€” not a foreign company operating in India.

The verdict

Royal Enfield is Indian-owned โ€” a brand born in England, kept alive in Chennai, and owned since 1994 by Eicher Motors. It is one of the clearest cases of an Indian company taking a foreign heritage brand and making it a global success.
