Is McDonald's Indian? The American Brand Run by Indian Franchisees

McDonald's in India serves no beef and sells the Maharaja Mac โ€” but the brand is American. Here's how Indian franchisees run the restaurants and what flows back to the US.

McDonald's came to India in 1996 and did something unusual: it built an entire menu without beef. The McAloo Tikki, the Maharaja Mac, and a large vegetarian range made it one of the most localised McDonald's menus anywhere in the world.

So who owns the McDonald's down the road?

The short answer: the McDonald's brand is American, but the restaurants in India are run by Indian franchisee companies.

The brand owner

The brand, recipes, and operating system belong to McDonald's Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, USA, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Around the world, most McDonald's restaurants are run by franchisees who pay the corporation royalties and fees.

The Indian operators

McDonald's in India is split into two regions, each run by a different Indian partner:

  • West and South India โ€” run by Westlife Foodworld Ltd (formerly Westlife Development), a company listed on Indian exchanges and controlled by the Jatia family, through its subsidiary Hardcastle Restaurants.
  • North and East India โ€” this region was long run by Connaught Plaza Restaurants, a joint venture whose partnership ended in a lengthy legal dispute settled in 2019. The region has since been operated by an Indian licensee, the MMG Group.

Where the money goes

As with Domino's, the store-level business is Indian-run: Indian operators, Indian staff, and mostly Indian-sourced ingredients. But the franchisees pay McDonald's Corporation royalties and fees for the brand and system. So part of every McDonald's bill in India flows to the United States, while the operating profit stays with the Indian franchisee.

The Indian alternatives

  • Haldiram's and Bikanervala restaurants โ€” Indian-owned quick-service chains
  • Wow! Momo โ€” an Indian-founded quick-service chain
  • Local restaurants โ€” independently owned in your city

The verdict

McDonald's in India is mixed: an American brand owned by McDonald's Corporation, with restaurants run by Indian franchisees โ€” Westlife Foodworld in the West and South, and the MMG Group in the North and East. Indian jobs and Indian operators, with a royalty going to Chicago.
