Is Domino's Indian? An American Brand Run by an Indian Company
Domino's is an American pizza brand, but every Domino's outlet in India is run by Jubilant FoodWorks, an Indian company. Here's who owns what โ and where the money goes.
Domino's is India's biggest pizza chain, with outlets in hundreds of cities and a delivery promise that turned "30 minutes" into a household phrase. Many people assume the whole operation is American. Others assume it must be Indian, given how local the menu has become โ paneer, tandoori toppings, and the Pizza Mania range.
The answer sits between the two.
The short answer: the Domino's brand is American, but the Indian business is run by an Indian company, Jubilant FoodWorks.
The brand owner
The Domino's brand belongs to Domino's Pizza, Inc., founded in 1960 and headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. Domino's operates worldwide mostly through franchising: local companies run the stores and pay fees and royalties to the American brand owner.
The Indian operator
In India, that local company is Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd, part of the Jubilant Bhartia Group controlled by the Bhartia family. Jubilant opened the first Domino's in India in 1996 and holds the master franchise rights for India, as well as for neighbouring markets including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
Jubilant FoodWorks is listed on the BSE and NSE, with the Bhartia family as the promoter group. It owns and operates the Indian stores, employs the staff, and runs the supply chain and commissaries. It also runs the Popeyes chain in India and has expanded abroad on its own account.
Where the money goes
This is the important distinction. The store-level business โ revenue, staff, kitchens, delivery fleet โ is Indian-run, and Jubilant's profits belong to an Indian-controlled company. But Jubilant pays Domino's Pizza, Inc. a royalty and franchise fees on its Domino's sales in exchange for the brand, recipes, and systems. So a slice of every Domino's order in India flows to the United States.
That makes Domino's a different case from a wholly foreign-owned subsidiary like Nestlรฉ India or LG Electronics India, where the foreign parent owns the operating company outright or by majority. Here, the operating company is Indian; the brand is not.
The Indian alternatives
- La Pino'z Pizza โ an Indian-founded pizza chain
- Local pizzerias and regional chains โ independently owned in your city
The verdict
Domino's in India is mixed: an American brand owned by Domino's Pizza, Inc., operated under licence by Jubilant FoodWorks, an Indian company controlled by the Bhartia family. Your money supports Indian jobs and an Indian operator, while a royalty goes to the US brand owner.
