Can India clothe itself?
Almost entirely — and this is one of India's quiet triumphs. From the cotton in the field to the shirt on the shelf, nearly every step happens on Indian soil. But trace the chain closely and one layer keeps being imported: not the cloth, not the labour — the machines. That is where the real dependency hides, and it is the same pattern across every pillar.

Cotton — growing the fibre1
Self-reliantIndia is among the world's largest cotton producers — roughly a quarter of global output. The raw fibre is overwhelmingly home-grown.

India grows the cotton and sews the shirt — but buys the machines that do it.
The fibre, the yarn, the cloth, the garment, the labour — all Indian. But the high-speed looms and advanced spinning machines come from Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Japan and China.3,4A country can be fully self-reliant in a product and still be gripped by whoever builds the tools that make it. Textile machinery is India's clothing lever — and it is held abroad.
The other fibres
India is also a major producer and exporter of man-made fibre — polyester and viscose filament yarn5 — and a traditional home of jute, silk and wool. The fibre base is broad and largely domestic; the frontier is technical textiles and the machinery behind synthetics.
Clothing is the pillar where India comes closest to true self-reliance: it can dress its people, and much of the world, from its own fields and factories. To close the gap entirely, India needs two things — to build its own high-speed textile machinery, and to grow more premium ELS cotton. Both are solvable. Both are open invitations.
