Who Owns Cadbury in India? The Journey from Birmingham to Chicago
Cadbury is one of India's most beloved chocolate brands. But it was acquired by Kraft Foods (now Mondelēz) in 2010 — here's the full ownership story.
Cadbury Dairy Milk is India's best-selling chocolate. Its purple packaging, its "Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye" campaigns, its association with festivals and celebrations — Cadbury has achieved a cultural integration in India that most brands spend billions trying to build. In India's gifting culture, a box of Cadbury chocolates is as natural as mithai.
But Cadbury's journey from a Quaker family's Birmingham chocolate shop to India's festival staple involves two ownership changes and now ends at a Chicago corporation.
The Cadbury family origins
John Cadbury founded the company in Birmingham, England in 1824. The company entered India in 1948 and quickly built a dominant position. For most of its history in India, Cadbury India was controlled by Cadbury Schweppes plc, the British company.
The Kraft Foods acquisition (2010)
In January 2010, Kraft Foods Inc. of Northfield, Illinois, USA completed a hostile takeover of Cadbury plc for approximately £11.9 billion (around $19.5 billion). It was one of the largest consumer goods acquisitions in history and was controversial in the UK, where politicians and unions argued against the sale of a British institution to an American company.
In India, Cadbury India Ltd. became a subsidiary of Kraft Foods' Indian arm.
The Mondelēz spin-off (2012)
In 2012, Kraft Foods spun off its global snacks business into a new company called Mondelēz International, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Cadbury India became part of Mondelēz India Foods Private Limited.
Today, Mondelēz International Inc. — a US company listed on NASDAQ — is the ultimate owner of every Cadbury product sold in India.
The Mondelēz India portfolio
Under the Mondelēz India umbrella:
- Chocolates: Cadbury Dairy Milk, 5 Star, Perk, Gems, Bournville, Toblerone
- Biscuits: Oreo, Ritz
- Health drinks: Bournvita
- Gum: Halls
The verdict
Cadbury in India is owned by Mondelēz International Inc., Chicago, USA. The brand's British origins and Indian cultural presence mask two decades of American corporate ownership. When you buy a Cadbury Dairy Milk, profits flow to a company traded on the NASDAQ.
Indian-owned chocolate and confectionery brands include Amul Chocolate (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation) — one of the few genuinely Indian alternatives at scale.
