Is Pepsi Indian? PepsiCo's Domination of India's Snacks and Beverage Market
PepsiCo entered India in 1989 and now sells Pepsi, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Lay's, Kurkure, and Quaker. All profits flow to PepsiCo Inc., USA. Here's the full breakdown.
Think about what you eat and drink at a party, on a road trip, or while watching cricket. Chances are PepsiCo made at least one item. Pepsi, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Mirinda, Lay's, Kurkure, Quaker oats, Aquafina water โ PepsiCo India's portfolio touches almost every snack and beverage occasion in Indian life.
None of it is Indian-owned.
PepsiCo's entry into India
PepsiCo entered India in 1989 under an unusual arrangement โ it had to agree to export a certain volume of Indian agricultural products to earn the right to sell in India. The negotiations required PepsiCo to partner with Punjab Agro Industries Corporation and Voltas as joint venture partners. This was part of India's pre-liberalisation conditions for foreign investment.
After 1991 liberalisation, PepsiCo gradually bought out its Indian partners and converted the operations into a wholly owned subsidiary: PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt. Ltd.
The Indian portfolio
| Category | PepsiCo Brands |
|---|---|
| Colas & carbonates | Pepsi, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Mirinda |
| Juices | Tropicana, Slice |
| Water | Aquafina |
| Chips & snacks | Lay's, Kurkure, Cheetos, Uncle Chipps |
| Health foods | Quaker oats |
Kurkure was developed specifically for the Indian market and feels deeply local โ even its advertising has always featured Indian family scenarios. But Kurkure is a brand of PepsiCo, listed as a foreign-controlled product.
Tropicana โ another acquired Indian taste
Tropicana entered India through PepsiCo and is the leading packaged juice brand. Like Kurkure and Lay's, Indian consumers associate it with India โ but profits flow to Purchase, New York.
The scale of what leaves India
PepsiCo India's annual revenue in India runs into thousands of crores. As a wholly owned subsidiary, 100% of the post-tax profit is repatriated to PepsiCo Inc., which reports it in its global accounts. India is one of PepsiCo's fastest-growing markets globally โ which is why the profit flow is significant.
The verdict
Pepsi, 7UP, Lay's, Kurkure, Aquafina, and the rest of the PepsiCo India portfolio are foreign-controlled โ all owned by PepsiCo, Inc., Purchase, New York, USA. None of the profit from these products remains under Indian ownership.
Indian-owned beverage and snack alternatives are available in the Switch To India database.
