Is Kellogg's Indian? The Breakfast Cereal That Taught India Corn Flakes
Kellogg's Corn Flakes and Chocos changed what many Indian families eat for breakfast. But the brand is American-owned. Here's the ownership story โ and the Indian alternatives.
For a generation of urban Indian families, breakfast changed when Kellogg's arrived. Corn Flakes with cold milk, Chocos for the children, and later muesli and oats for the health-conscious โ Kellogg's effectively built the packaged breakfast-cereal habit in a country whose breakfasts had always been poha, idli, paratha, and upma.
The short answer: Kellogg's is foreign-controlled โ an American brand.
The origin
Kellogg's traces back to Battle Creek, Michigan, where W.K. Kellogg founded the company in 1906 around the flaked-cereal process he and his brother had developed. Corn Flakes became one of the most recognisable packaged foods in the world.
Kellogg's entered India in 1994, soon after liberalisation, operating through Kellogg India Pvt. Ltd. Early on it struggled โ Indians poured hot milk on the flakes, which went soggy โ and the company adapted its products and messaging to Indian habits over the following decades.
Who owns Kellogg's today
The American parent restructured in 2023. The Kellogg Company split in two: its North American cereal business was spun off as WK Kellogg Co, while the remaining company โ renamed Kellanova โ kept the global snacks business and Kellogg's international cereal operations, including India.
In 2024, Mars, Incorporated โ the privately held American confectionery and food company โ agreed to acquire Kellanova. Whichever way you trace the chain, the Indian Kellogg's business sits under American ownership: the brand, the formulations, and the profit flow to a US parent.
What's on the Indian shelf
- Corn Flakes โ the flagship, in multiple variants
- Chocos โ the children's chocolate cereal
- Muesli, oats, and granola โ the health-positioned range
- Special K โ the "weight-management" line
The Indian alternatives
Breakfast cereals are one of the easier categories in which to choose Indian-owned:
- Bagrry's โ Indian-owned cereal, oats, and muesli maker
- Saffola Oats โ Marico, Indian-owned
- Tata Soulfull โ millet-based cereals under Tata Consumer Products
- True Elements and other Indian D2C breakfast brands
And of course, the most Indian-owned breakfast of all remains the one cooked at home.
The verdict
Kellogg's is foreign-controlled โ the Indian business belongs to Kellanova, an American company that Mars, Incorporated agreed to acquire in 2024. Despite three decades of adapting to Indian tastes, the brand's ownership and profit are American. Bagrry's, Saffola Oats, and Tata Soulfull are the Indian-owned alternatives.
