Is Hero MotoCorp Indian? How Hero Became Fully Indian After Honda Left

For 26 years it was Hero Honda. Then Honda exited and Hero MotoCorp was born. Here's how India's largest two-wheeler maker became fully Indian-owned.

The Hero Splendor may be the most Indian vehicle there is โ€” the motorcycle of the daily commuter, the delivery rider, the small-town shopkeeper, and the farmer heading to the mandi. Hero MotoCorp has for years been India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer by volume, and among the largest in the world.

But for most of its history, Hero was half of a joint venture with a Japanese giant. The story of how it became fully Indian is one of the most interesting ownership transitions in Indian industry.

The short answer: Hero MotoCorp is Indian-owned.

The Hero Group: bicycles first

The Hero Group was built by the Munjal brothers, led by Brijmohan Lall Munjal, who started out supplying bicycle components in Ludhiana after Partition. Hero Cycles grew into one of the world's largest bicycle manufacturers. Motorcycles came next.

Hero Honda: 1984โ€“2011

In 1984, the Hero Group formed Hero Honda Motors, a joint venture with Honda Motor Company of Japan. Each held 26% of the company. Honda brought fuel-efficient four-stroke engine technology; Hero brought manufacturing, distribution, and an understanding of the Indian buyer. The "Fill it, shut it, forget it" advertising for the Hero Honda CD100 became legendary, and the joint venture came to dominate Indian motorcycles.

The split

In 2010, the partners agreed to part ways. Honda had already set up its own wholly-owned Indian two-wheeler subsidiary (Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India) and wanted to compete directly. Under the separation, the Munjal family bought Honda's 26% stake, and in 2011 the company was renamed Hero MotoCorp with a new brand identity.

Many observers expected Hero to struggle without Honda's technology. Instead, it built its own R&D capability, developed engines in-house, and kept its position as India's largest two-wheeler maker by volume.

Who owns Hero MotoCorp today

Hero MotoCorp Ltd is listed on the BSE and NSE. The Munjal family promoter group holds the largest, controlling stake, with domestic and foreign institutional investors and retail shareholders holding the float. There is no foreign parent and no foreign controlling shareholder. It is an Indian-controlled company.

Hero has also invested in India's electric transition โ€” it is a significant shareholder in the Indian EV maker Ather Energy and runs its own EV brand, Vida.

The competitive context

Indian two-wheelers are a category where Indian ownership is strong. Hero competes against:

  • Honda (HMSI) โ€” Japanese, its former partner and now its fiercest rival
  • Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor โ€” both Indian-owned
  • Royal Enfield (Eicher Motors) โ€” Indian-owned
  • Suzuki and Yamaha โ€” Japanese

The verdict

Hero MotoCorp is Indian-owned โ€” controlled by the Munjal family since it bought out Honda's stake in the 2010โ€“11 separation. The company that was once half-Japanese is now fully Indian-controlled, and it remains the country's largest two-wheeler maker by volume.
