Is Dabur Indian? A 140-Year-Old Ayurveda Company Still Run by Its Founding Family
Dabur Chyawanprash, Dabur Honey, Real juices, Vatika, Hajmola โ Dabur is one of India's oldest FMCG companies and still controlled by the Burman family. Here's the story.
Few Indian homes are without a Dabur product somewhere. The winter jar of Chyawanprash, the bottle of honey, Hajmola after a heavy meal, Real fruit juice, Vatika hair oil, Odomos on a monsoon evening, Dabur Red toothpaste. Dabur is one of the most widely used FMCG companies in India โ and one of the oldest.
The short answer: Dabur is Indian-owned, and has been for its entire history.
The founding: Calcutta, 1884
Dabur was founded in 1884 in Calcutta by Dr. S.K. Burman, a physician who prepared Ayurvedic medicines for diseases such as cholera and malaria and distributed them to people in villages. The name is often explained as a blend of "Da" for daktar (doctor) and "bur" from Burman.
From those medicinal roots, Dabur grew over the following century into a broad consumer-goods company, while keeping Ayurveda at the centre of its identity.
Who owns Dabur today
Dabur India Ltd is listed on the BSE and NSE. The Burman family, as promoters, hold a controlling stake of roughly two-thirds of the company. The rest is held by domestic and foreign institutional investors and retail shareholders.
The family professionalised management early โ Dabur has long had professional CEOs running day-to-day operations โ but ownership and ultimate control remain with the founding family. There is no foreign parent and no foreign controlling shareholder.
The portfolio
- Health care: Dabur Chyawanprash, Dabur Honey, Hajmola, Pudin Hara, Honitus
- Oral care: Dabur Red Paste, Meswak, Babool
- Hair and skin care: Vatika, Dabur Amla, Gulabari
- Foods and beverages: Real fruit juices, and Badshah Masala, acquired in 2022
- Home care: Odomos mosquito repellent, Odonil air fresheners
Dabur also has a large international business, selling across the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia โ another example of an Indian company exporting Indian brands, rather than the reverse.
Why it matters
Dabur competes head-on with the foreign FMCG majors: in toothpaste against Colgate (USA) and Pepsodent and Closeup (HUL/Unilever, UK); in hair oil and care against HUL and P&G; in juices against PepsiCo's Tropicana. In almost every one of its categories, Dabur is the Indian-owned option on the shelf.
The verdict
Dabur is Indian-owned โ founded in Calcutta in 1884 and still controlled by the Burman family, who hold roughly two-thirds of Dabur India Ltd. When you buy Chyawanprash, Real juice, or Dabur Red, the profit stays with an Indian-controlled company that has been doing this for 140 years.
