Is Colgate Indian? The American Toothpaste Brand in Every Indian Home

Colgate is the most widely used toothpaste brand in India. But it is majority-controlled by Colgate-Palmolive Company, USA โ€” not an Indian corporation.

Colgate is arguably the most widely distributed consumer brand in India. Available in the most remote rural kirana stores, used by hundreds of millions of Indians daily, and synonymous with toothpaste itself in colloquial usage โ€” "Colgate maango" means "bring toothpaste," regardless of brand. It is hard to imagine a brand more embedded in Indian daily life.

And yet: Colgate is American, and majority-owned by its US parent.

The corporate structure

Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited is publicly listed on the BSE and NSE, which means Indian investors hold shares. But the majority shareholder is Colgate-Palmolive Company, headquartered in New York City, which holds approximately 51% of the Indian listed entity.

This 51% majority is the minimum required for control โ€” and Colgate-Palmolive Company exercises it fully. The Indian subsidiary's strategy, brand licensing, product formulations, and management are directed by the US parent.

The royalty and dividend flow

Beyond the dividend (51% of which flows to the US parent), Colgate-Palmolive (India) pays royalties to Colgate-Palmolive Company for use of the Colgate brand. This means every tube of toothpaste sold in India generates:

  • Operating expenses paid to Indian employees and suppliers
  • Taxes paid to the Indian government
  • A royalty payment to the US parent company
  • Dividends: 51% of which go to the US parent company

The Indian products in the portfolio

Colgate India's portfolio includes Colgate Dental Cream, Colgate Strong Teeth, Colgate Total, Colgate MaxFresh, Colgate Vedshakti (an ayurvedic variant developed for India), Colgate 360 toothbrushes, and Palmolive personal care products.

The Vedshakti and other India-specific variants are developed to compete with Indian-owned ayurvedic brands like Dabur Red, Patanjali Dant Kanti, and Vicco. But the Indian-specific product development does not change the ownership structure.

Indian alternatives

India has genuinely Indian-owned toothpaste brands including Dabur Red (Dabur India), Patanjali Dant Kanti (Patanjali Ayurved), and Vicco Vajradanti (Vicco Laboratories). These brands keep their profits in India.

The verdict

Colgate is foreign-controlled. The majority shareholder is Colgate-Palmolive Company, New York, USA. Despite being the most-used toothpaste brand in India, its profits majority-flow to America.
