Is Amazon Indian? Why India's Favourite Marketplace Sends Profits to Seattle
Amazon India is one of India's largest e-commerce platforms. But it is wholly owned by Amazon.com Inc., Seattle โ and every rupee of platform profit exits India.
Amazon India is everywhere: in metropolitan apartments and rural pin codes, on smartphones and smart TVs, in logistics networks and cloud infrastructure. Amazon has invested over $6.5 billion in India, built dozens of fulfilment centres, and employs hundreds of thousands directly and indirectly. By many metrics it is one of India's most significant corporate entities.
It is entirely American-owned.
The corporate structure
Amazon operates in India through several entities:
- Amazon Seller Services Pvt. Ltd. โ the Indian marketplace platform
- Amazon Transportation Services Pvt. Ltd. โ logistics and last-mile delivery
- Amazon Web Services India Pvt. Ltd. โ cloud infrastructure
- Amazon Development Centre India Pvt. Ltd. โ technology development
- Prime Video India โ streaming entertainment
Every single one of these entities is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., headquartered in Seattle, Washington, USA. There is no Indian equity participation at any level of the corporate structure.
The FDI angle
Amazon technically operates as a marketplace rather than a retailer in India, due to India's FDI rules that restrict foreign investment in multi-brand retail. Amazon's Indian entities operate as technology service providers and logistics companies. Amazon sellers are independent third parties.
This FDI structuring is a legal requirement, not an indication of Indian ownership. Amazon.com Inc. controls and funds all of these entities.
What leaves India
Amazon India charges sellers a commission (typically 2โ40% depending on category), a fulfilment fee, and an advertising fee. It also generates subscription revenue from Prime memberships. AWS charges cloud infrastructure fees to Indian businesses and government entities.
After paying Indian taxes, employee costs, and operating expenses, the net profit from all these revenue streams flows to Amazon's consolidated US accounts. Jeff Bezos (and after 2021, Andy Jassy) reports these as part of Amazon's international operations segment.
The investment versus the profit question
Amazon's $6.5 billion investment in India represents capital inflow. But the operating profit โ once the investment phase matures โ represents capital outflow. India benefits from employment and tax revenue; the profit margin benefit accrues to Seattle.
The verdict
Amazon India is foreign-controlled โ 100% owned by Amazon.com Inc., USA. Indian e-commerce alternatives with genuine domestic ownership include Meesho and Reliance's JioMart.
