Chinese Brands Operating in India: Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus — Full Ownership Map
A complete ownership breakdown of Chinese brands operating in India — from smartphones to e-commerce — and what their corporate structures actually look like.
Chinese brands occupy a significant share of India's consumer electronics and smartphone market. Despite geopolitical tension following the 2020 Galwan clashes, app bans, and FDI scrutiny, several Chinese-origin brands continue to sell billions of rupees worth of products in India. Here is an ownership breakdown of the major ones.
Xiaomi
Parent: Xiaomi Corporation, Beijing (listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange).
Xiaomi India operates through Xiaomi Technology India Pvt. Ltd. For several years Xiaomi was India's largest smartphone brand by shipments. Despite manufacturing partnerships with Indian firms, all intellectual property, technology licensing, and ultimate profit accruals belong to the Chinese parent company.
Vivo
Parent: BBK Electronics Corporation / Vivo Communication Technology, Dongguan, China.
Vivo India has faced scrutiny from Indian enforcement authorities over alleged financial irregularities. The brand has tried to emphasise its India manufacturing, but ownership control remains with the Chinese parent. BBK Electronics also controls Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme.
Oppo
Parent: Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Dongguan, China (BBK Electronics subsidiary).
Oppo India is a wholly owned subsidiary. Like Vivo, it manufactures partly in India under the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme, but profits flow to China.
OnePlus
Parent: OnePlus Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. — effectively controlled by Oppo/BBK Electronics.
OnePlus positioned itself as a premium "fan-first" brand and once had independent investor backing, but is now integrated into the Oppo ecosystem. Indian consumers buying OnePlus are buying a Chinese-controlled product.
Realme
Parent: Realme Mobile Telecommunications (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. — spun off from Oppo, with ties to BBK Electronics.
Realme entered India as a budget-segment challenger and quickly gained market share. Corporate origin and control: China.
AliExpress
Parent: Alibaba Group Holding Limited, Hangzhou, China.
AliExpress is the cross-border e-commerce platform of Alibaba. AliExpress was banned in India in June 2020 as part of the Indian government's ban on 59 Chinese mobile apps following the Galwan Valley border clashes. It no longer operates in the Indian market and cannot be accessed or used by Indian consumers.
Amazfit
Parent: Zepp Health Corporation (formerly Huami Technology), Hefei, China.
Amazfit smartwatches are popular in India's mid-range wearables segment. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange but is China-founded and China-headquartered.
BYD
Parent: BYD Company Limited, Shenzhen, China.
BYD has entered India's electric vehicle segment and is selling electric buses and cars through Indian distribution partnerships. It is the world's largest EV maker by volume, and entirely Chinese-controlled.
The policy context
India has banned over 300 Chinese apps, tightened FDI rules requiring government approval for investments from countries sharing a land border with India, and scrutinised Chinese corporate structures under FEMA. Despite this, smartphone and electronics brands with Chinese ownership continue to operate through Indian-registered subsidiaries and manufacturing partnerships.
The bottom line
Every Chinese brand listed above is controlled by a Chinese corporation or founder. India manufacturing does not change ownership. Use the Switch To India platform to find Indian-made and Indian-owned electronics alternatives.
